El Establo Mountain Hotel, Costa Rica

El Establo Mountain Hotel, Costa Rica Resort and Area Activities

Why choose Monteverde and El Establo Mountain Hotel?

The Monteverde Cloudforest Preserve crosses the Tilaran Mountain Range, which is part of the Continental Divide.  This area is known as Monteverde which translates to “Green Mountain” and that is exactly what you will find as you drive up a long and steep gravel road that winds up the mountain from the Panamerican Highway (for most people, originating in San Jose).

The Monteverde Cloudforest Reserve is a 12,300 acre wildlife sanctuary and home to dense jungle providing shelter to numerous species of animals, reptiles, birds and insects and is spectacular.

The Monteverde Cloudforest Preserve is one of the most developed and best maintained attractions in Costa Rica.  Whether you choose to hike and explore on your own or hire a guide or arrange a scheduled tour, you will not be disappointed in feeling immersed in a largely untouched forest home to an amazing number of birds, animals, snakes, butterflies, exotic ferns, orchids, bromeliads and lush tropical foliage.  Because many of the animals are rare and elusive, a guide who knows where to look and what to look for is really valuable if you want to see the snakes, monkeys, sloths, toads, quetzal, toucans, etc that are all around you in the jungle.  Guides are a wealth of knowledge of the country and area and are well worth hiring.

The park is open daily from 7 am to 4 pm.  Night tours are also available beginning at 6:15 pm for a unique perspective of the jungle at night.

A note or reminder about the weather in Monteverde.  While you may experience hot weather in the central or Arenal area, the climate in Monteverde is always cooler, windier and wetter than many other areas especially from August through November.  Be prepared with an extra layer of warm clothes and a layer that is waterproof as well as good hiking shoes for hiking the area.
