Why I created this Jewel Runaway Bay review? In October I made a trip to Jamaica for meetings and went a bit early so that I could stay at an all inclusive resort that I was really interested in.This resort was Jewel Runaway Bay Beach & Golf Resort located approximately one and a half hours from Montego Bay (towards Ocho Rios) in Jamaica.
The summer before I had the pleasure of being at the sister resort Jewel Dunn’s River and really liked it. When Jewel Runaway Bay officially opened, I had to try it.
Jewel Runaway Bay Beach & Golf Resort is not new – it’s the renovated Breezes resort. At the time that I was there almost all of the all inclusive resort was renovated. The only real areas that needed renovations were the cheapest room category (Premier Guest Room). The resort is adding a water park also which was not yet started in October but they said would be added soon.
Are you looking for a great value family all inclusive resort with an amazing beach and really friendly service? You will find all details in this Jewel Runaway Bay Review.
Jewel Runaway Bay Beach & Golf Resort Review By Sharon Moormann
All Inclusive Resort Rooms:The room I stayed in was a Waterview Guest Room and I thought it was very nice. The room contained 2 double beds (as requested), ample bathroom with shower and a nice balcony with a great view. We were in the Turquoise building right near the beach and very central in the resort.
Plunge Pool Guest Rooms are wonderful. They are located in either the Topaz or Ruby buildings which are just a short walk away from the main area. That short walk adds to the privacy of these rooms. The balconies outside the rooms are really quite large and vegetation and side barriers make the plunge pool nice and private. I thought these rooms were perfect for hot summer days or evenings spent in your own private pool.
If you’d rather be closer to the ocean, Jewel Runaway Bay also has Junior Suite Oceanfront Plunge Pool rooms which also have a large patio with plunge pool but are near an unobstructed beach area.
The resort also offers One Bedroom suites with Butler service.
Note: Plunge pool rooms are adult only
Resort Dining Options:
I found there were plenty of dining options to keep us happy. Mornings were limited to the main buffet at Coral Café which wasn’t the best I’ve ever had but the egg station (Egg Man entertaining!) was great, lots of fresh fruit and fresh juice smoothies and other options were plenty.
The Beach Grill was great for mid day muchies and there was a great pizza option too – try the Jerk Chicken Pizza – it’s great!
Evening dining had enough options to keep me happy – Pizza, Italian, Teppanyaki and the buffet for lazy nights.
Included Resort Activities:
In this Jewel Runaway Bay Review I think the truly best feature and resort activity to share is lazing on the beach. The beach is AMAZING!! The sand is white, the water is true blue and shallow for either walking out in it or swimming. While on the beach you have access to the resort’s non-motorized water sports.
When you do want to get off the beach there are pool activities, tennis and golf. The tennis courts are well kept and staff is there to help you out if needed. The golf course offers free greens fees to guests along with free clinics. Caddies are mandatory and there will be a charge for them as well as golf equipment rentals.
Once a week the resort offers a party at the Ranch where the entire family will enjoy a hayride, laser tag, visiting the animals, games, campfire and more!
One notable for this area and I think all of Jamaica – bring mosquito spray with you. You may need to use it on the beach but for sure when off resort and in any jungle area. I found the mosquitoes bad at the ranch and on the course.
Jamaica is known for resort nannies. While Jewel does not include a nanny in your stay, the child care workers at the kids club were definitely nanny quality. We witnessed patience and caring with little ones. The room offered lots of options for games, dress up and other activities for small ones. A separate teens club is supervised and a place for them to be on their own.
I found the staff at Jewel Runaway Bay so friendly – everyone including the maids, the guys who stocked the mini bars, the gardener who showed us what breadfruit was, the tour staff – all so very friendly and helpful. It truly felt like a family setting which isn’t always the case in the Caribbean because their culture is so laid back. Sharing this with you as my readers in this Jewel Runaway Bay Review was very important to me because it isn't common nor can you expect it everywhere.
My Overall Impression:
I loved it. I’ve stayed at a number of resorts in Jamaica and this is the friendliest staff I have encountered – second only to Sandals Whitehouse and Couples Tower Isle. The beach is wonderful – second only to Negril and maybe Sandals Whitehouse. The food was good – not the quality of Jamaica’s 5 star resorts.
The price though is definitely less than comparable resorts that I've been to. At the end of my Jewel Runaway Bay Review, just some main pros and cons I want you to know about.
All Inclusive Resort Pros:
Caring kids club
Great price and value
Excellent plunge pool rooms
All Inclusive Resort Cons:
Distance from airport if you have little ones or a late flight
Not always top shelf liquor
Buffet – average quality
Lowest priced rooms need renovating
