Cozumel island is located just off the coast of Cancun near Playa del Carmen. What that means for the average tourist is that you can access the island from mainland via the ferry departing from Playa del Carmen or you can fly into the Cozumel airport. That means the island is accessible to everyone and to all of the Cozumel all inclusive resorts!
Getting Your Bearings on Cozumel Island
Cozumel has one major city and it’s San Miguel which is where the airport is located and where the ferry dock leads you to. Step off the ferry dock and you’re within blocks of shopping, restaurants and nightclubs. Cozumel features a duty-free zone which offers everything from silver, high quality gems, liquor including tequila and souvenirs. Just remember, duty free doesn’t always mean cheaper! It’s fun to just walk around San Miguel and visit the shops and if you want to mingle with the locals, come downtown on Sunday afternoon.
Are There Beaches on Cozumel Island?
Yes, Cozumel has beaches but it also has lots of areas where the ocean edge is rocky reef. If you have a particular request you’ll need to let our Sunseekers Vacations Team know that right away so we don’t get your heart set on a resort then find out it’s not on a beach!
- Beaches on Cozumel that are occupied by resorts are found on the west side of Cozumel island.
- Beaches on the east side of the island are rocky and rugged.
Most all inclusive resorts on the west side have at least some beach with resort access but the quality and size of beach varies among the beach resorts. Cozumel also offers a number of beach clubs that have a larger beach with amenities available to guests. A small fee is required for entry and some beach resorts included this access as part of their stay. Beach clubs such as Playa San Francisco, Playa Mia and Paradise Beach are popular with locals as well as tourists – travel tip: avoid days when the cruise ships are docked as many these beach areas will be far more crowded on those days.
All Inclusive Resorts On Cozumel Island With a Beach
One of my favorite all inclusive beach resorts is Secrets Aura Cozumel. I’m a huge Secrets Resorts fan and the cozy beach spot south-west of San Miguel is a hit with me. This resort is a solid 4 ½ star adult only all inclusive on a beach. If you would like to check it out, just ask our Sunseekers Vacations team!
For families, the Iberostar Cozumel all inclusive resort offers one of the larger beaches in the area as well as a great eco-resort environment where you’ll see lots of iguanas, local animals and birds on the resort.
On the north-west part of Cozumel island closer to the airport and golf course are a few budget all inclusive resorts – El Cozumeleno has a pretty good beach.
All Inclusive Resorts On Cozumel Island With a Reef
Cozumel Palace is one of my favorite resorts on Cozumel and also with my customers. It’s located within a short walk of San Miguel and on a rocky reef area of the island. What the resort lacks in beach, it makes up for in the fact that you just walk down the back stairs and into the ocean and snorkel at any time. Gotta love it!
What to Do in Cozumel
Scuba diving is likely the number one attraction of the island of Cozumel. With over 40 reefs and a sunken Spanish galleon the island of Cozumel is home to unlimited scuba and snorkeling adventures. Many resorts such as Cozumel Palace, Iberostar Cozumel, Secrets Aura Cozumel and others have their own on-site dive operators making diving excursions quick and easy. For novice divers, resorts also offer PADI certification.
A cool new way to explore the under-sea terrain as a non-diver is the Atlantis Adventures submarine ride which takes you 100 feet into the Chankanaab National Park coral reef.
On so many bucket lists is a dolphin swim experience and the island offers that option for you quick and easy with Dolphinarius Cozumel.
Do you feel like wandering around on a larger beach? Take a 15 minute boat ride to Passion Island and relax on the beach or explore the small island by Jeep.
Speaking of exploring, you can rent your own vehicle and head out on the island and explore it easily in an afternoon. Or, more fun yet, hire a taxi from your hotel to be your driver and guide. That is what I do because then I can stop at my local favorite – Coconuts and have a drink and one of their great dishes (I like the conch fritters) and enjoy the cliff top view and then have the driver take us around the rest of the island. The benefits of a driver is that you can ask for something special and they’ll find it if possible and you can enjoy a drink and not worry about driving. The benefits of driving on your own are that you can stop where and when you want. I know that I’ve seen many areas of Cozumel Island that I would not have without a driver and guide. My favorite part of a Cozumel Island trip is just the laid back island feel. Even if you’re at a resort that’s busy, there’s just a feel about the island that everyone loves. Oh and let’s not forget the amazing sunsets that the west side all inclusive resorts offer – the views are breathtaking and definitely worth getting an ocean view room!
